Hand-drawn outdoor mural on Lucky Lane in Bristol, UK. This mural was painted as part of the Bristol Mural Collective paint fest, where 30+ artists were invited to paint Lucky Lane to revitalise a street that was only really used as a cut through to the local supermarket. The organisers got permission from all of the residents for the walls that were painted. Since the street was called Lucky Lane, the theme the organisers set was luck. I decided to paint a key hole with many figures with talismans, lucky charms, lucky decorations and more.

The hallway is lit up by blacklight so the artwork needed to be painted using UV reactive paints. The client had a clear idea that they wanted a neon cityscape in the rain. The wall features a multitude of neon signs, all with hand lettered Japanese characters. Some phrases are simply dish names served at Bonsai Plant Kitchen, while others are vegan catchphrases. To passers by the signs just look like artistic Japanese lettering, but to those who can read the characters there is a lot of playfulness to the Japanese calligraphy. The drawing features a modern character of a woman with an umbrella, standing in the rain amongst the neon signs. The painting uses three colours, a base white using acrylic paint, a white UV reactive paint and a neon pink UV reactive paint. The use of the two different neon paints that react under blacklight create a very striking image in the dark hallway.
